How to recover data from formatted hard drive?

I have a 1TB HD that has a lot of data on it. I had 3 hard drives plugged into my computer and formatted the wrong one. After doing a google search I have found several programs to recover the data. They do a free scan and I can see all the files, but now they want me to pay $70 to recover the files. Are there any free programs, or anything I can do myself to recover the files, knowing that they are there?

Uneraser should do the trick and it has a trial version that you can use for Partition Recovery. I've used it a lot at work and at home. We had to format a drive in order to get it to work, Uneraser recovered almost everything off of it but your mileage may vary.
